How to Create NFT Metadata for OpenSea: Complete Step-by-Step Guide

NFT metadata is what gives your NFT its identity — the name, description, image, and traits that appear on OpenSea, Rarible, and other marketplaces. Getting it wrong means your NFTs display incorrectly or are rejected by marketplaces.

What is NFT Metadata?

NFT metadata is a JSON file that describes your NFT. When someone views your NFT on OpenSea, the marketplace reads this JSON file to display the name, image, and properties.

A standard OpenSea-compatible metadata file looks like this:

name, description, image URL, and attributes array with trait_type and value pairs.

The Required Fields

**name** — The NFT name. Required.

**description** — A text description. Required.

**image** — URL to the image, ideally on IPFS. Required.

**attributes** — Array of trait objects. Strongly recommended for rarity ranking.

How to Upload Images to IPFS

Before creating metadata, upload your images to IPFS via Pinata (most popular, free tier available), NFT.Storage (free, powered by Filecoin), or Infura IPFS (developer-friendly API).

Once uploaded, you get an IPFS hash. Use it as: ipfs://QmXxx.../image.png
